STEMCELL Technologies is a market-driven biotechnology company with its head office and principal place of business located in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. STEMCELL provides a range of products that support innovative medical research in the areas of hematology, immunology, cell transplantation, gene therapy, cancer research and developmental biology.
STEMCELL’s lead product, MethoCult® has gone on to become the world’s best selling methylcellulose-based medium for hematopoietic colony assays and is regarded as the industry standard. Additionally, the company has developed specialized media products for hematopoietic (StemSpan®, MyeloCult®), mesenchymal (MesenCult®), neural (NeuroCult®), endothelial (EndoCult®) stem cells and/or progenitor cells, and hESCs/hiPSCs (mTeSR®1); the success of these products solidifying the company’s reputation as the primary source of specialized media products for stem cell research.
STEMCELL Technologies has also diversified to become a major player in the cell separation market with StemSep®, RosetteSep®, and EasySep®, three unique cell enrichment systems that utilize STEMCELL’s patented tetrameric antibody complex (TAC) technology, and SpinSep® for murine cell separations, that utilizes an alternate technology. In 2005, STEMCELL launched RoboSep®, the first fully automated cell separator. Thus, STEMCELL provides products for virtually all aspects of experimental hematology and stem cell biology, including enrichment, expansion and evaluation of both primitive and mature cells of a variety of lineages.
The prominence of STEMCELL’s products in the experimental hematology field has propelled the company into playing an important role in the standardization of hematopoietic colony assays. In addition to providing Standardized Media Products, STEMCELL coordinates global Proficiency Testing Programs for hematopoietic colony identification and enumeration, and conducts Training Sessions on cell separation and hematopoietic colony assays. Both large and small pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies routinely access STEMCELL’s scientific and technical expertise via the Contract Assay Service and/or Contract Research programs offered.
